PROMIS Domains for Adults
Adult measures include core domains relevant to most people (Core Domains) and domains likely relevant to a subset of people (Additional Domains).
Adult Core Domain Definitions
Core PROMIS domains measure physical, mental, and social health and are relevant to most people.
Ability to Participate in Social Roles & Activities
Perceived ability to perform one’s usual social roles and activities.
Anxiety
Cognitive Function
Assesses 1) mental acuity, concentration, verbal and nonverbal memory, verbal fluency, and perceived changes in these cognitive functions and 2) the extent to which cognitive impairments interfere with daily functioning, whether other people observe cognitive impairments, and the impact of cognitive dysfunction on quality of life.
Depression
Includes negative mood (sadness, guilt), negative views of oneself (self-criticism, worthlessness), social cognition (loneliness, interpersonal alienation), decreased positive affect, and engagement (loss of interest, meaning, and purpose).
Fatigue
Assesses a range of symptoms, from mild subjective feelings of tiredness to an overwhelming, debilitating, and sustained sense of exhaustion that likely decreases one’s ability to execute daily activities and function normally in family or social roles.

Physical Function
Assesses self-reported capability (not performance) of physical activities. This includes the functioning of one’s upper extremities (dexterity), lower extremities (walking or mobility), and central regions (neck, back), as well as instrumental activities of daily living, such as running errands.
Sleep Disturbance
Perceptions of sleep quality, sleep depth, and restoration associated with sleep.

Pediatric and Parent Proxy Core Domain Definitions
Core PROMIS domains measure physical, mental, and social health and are relevant to most people.
Anxiety
Fear (fearfulness, panic), anxious misery (worry, dread), hyperarousal (tension, nervousness, restlessness), and somatic symptoms related to arousal (racing heart, dizziness).
Depressive Symptoms
Negative mood (sadness, guilt), views of self (self-criticism, worthlessness), and social cognition (loneliness, interpersonal alienation), as well as decreased positive affect and engagement (loss of interest, meaning, and purpose).
Fatigue
Range of symptoms, from mild subjective feelings of tiredness to an overwhelming, debilitating, and sustained sense of exhaustion.
Pain Intensity
Evaluates how much a person hurts.
Pain Interference
Consequences of pain on relevant aspects of one’s life. This includes the extent to which pain hinders engagement with social, cognitive, emotional, physical, and recreational activities.
Peer Relationships
Quality of relationships with friends and other acquaintances.
Physical Function – Mobility
Activities of physical mobility such as getting out of bed or a chair to activities such as running.
